UPAC Cinema

UPAC Cinema is a student-run Union club, which shows movies in the DCC. Tickets are very cheap, so even the poorest student can buy them. If you can't afford them, simply volunteering to help out a few shows every semester will mean you can get in for free for the rest of the time (and eventually, you may even get a position where you get paid to be there).

And if you can't even afford that, just walking in through one of the side doors and acting as if you're meant to be there will cause no problems on most days.

Whoop Whoop Whoop

It is a tradition for the audience to "Whoop" along with the film that is shown before the movie previews. Here is a capture from LilyChat:

# -> From Mr. Itty [@home], to cinema, rpi:
# - I don't suppose there's any really old folks here who can tell me when/why
# - the "Whoop-Whoop-Whoop" tradition began at UPAC Cinema?
#
# -> From Mr. Itty [@home], to cinema, rpi:
# - (I know the Whoops are actually on the sound track of the tag shown before
# - trailers, but when/why did people start shouting along with it?)
#
# -> From Strider, to rpi:
# - as I recall... just about the day they started showing the trailers (I'd
# - say it was about 88 or 89)
#
# -> From Prisoner, to rpi:
# - i think its older than 88. it seemed well established (and a very old
# - print) when i was there in 88.
#
# -> From Prisoner, to rpi:
# - i vaguely remember they got rid of it sometime around 1990... only to
# - bring it back when people would whoop during other clips in protest.
#
# -> From notFish. [white dunks on pope], to rpi:
# - I FEEL like the whooping may have started around 1986. But don't have much
# - to go on for that.
#
# -> From KimKim [@work in Indiana], to rpi:
# - Do people still whoop?
#
# -> From Mr. Itty [@home], to rpi:
# - absolutely.
#
# -> From Mr. Itty [@home], to rpi:
# - UPAC makes sure to go in during the first few shows of the year to do the
# - Whoops, to make sure the tradition is passed to the new frosh.
#
# -> From tanman [-> bed], to rpi:
# - Who goes in to shout "You fucking geeeeks!" to make sure that gets passed
# - on?
#
# -> From puffy, to rpi:
# - It's "shut the fuck up" now
#
# -> From Mr. Itty [@home], to rpi:
# - oh, that's the other thing. As long as I was there, it's been 'Shut the
# - fuck up'. I hear from older people it used to be "Shut up Geeks!"
#
# -> From tanman [-> bed], to rpi:
# - Ah... Plus ca change, plus le meme chose.
#
# -> From Strider, to rpi:
# - It can't have been to much older than 88, since that's about when the
# - trailer was introduced (before that it was something even cheesier as I
# - recall). it caught on almost instantly.
